I’ve talked about the subject before on how to be a successful business owner when you never seem quite ready to implement the winning strategy. There always seems to be a reason why you can’t take your business to the next level. T. Harv Eker would say “You either have reasons or results”. Reasons are no more than fear disguising itself as excuses.
I see business owners all the time who get stuck in thinking they need to learn just a little more before they implement action even though they already know enough to become a successful business owner. The majority of business owners get stuck because of their fears.
- The fear of failure
- The fear of looking stupid
- The fear of losing everything
- The fear of change
- Waiting for the perfect time
- The fear of success
- Feeling not good enough
- The fear of ….
Reasons for Getting Into Business
What are your reasons for getting into business? If it’s to make money, the need for money will never sustain you in the long term of business ownership. What is your purpose for getting into business? Do you have a BIG why? A purpose that you’re passionate about is a reason that will sustain you for the long term. If you’re passionate about your “why”, that “why” will sustain you to overcome the obstacles you’ll face in the long term of business ownership.
If you’re not serious about your business enough to face your fears, then you’re wasting your time and money because your business will remain only a hobby.
If you’re risk adverse as a business owner, you probably shouldn’t go into business ownership at all. Successful Business Owners take risks all the time.
A successful business owner will face their fears head on
- Stop listening to your inner voice that’s trying to protect you
- Stop listening to your family who tells you “You can’t do it”
- Stop listening to anyone who hasn’t done what you want to do
- Stop listening to unsuccessful People
- Stop telling yourself you can’t do it because it’s just “your story”
- Stop thinking “but you don’t understand”
The fact is most people really don’t want to try hard enough to succeed. Most people will throw in the towel after just a couple failures. Sad, but true. To overcome this, you want to surround yourself with cheerleaders who have your best interest at heart and that doesn’t mean keeping you where you’re at right now in life.
Get someone who will mentor you. Get a coach and listen to what they say. There is a coach who can help you overcome every fear you have. Take action. If all you ever do is learn and are only willing to do what’s safe, your business will fail. If you know for example that public speaking or doing webinars will take your business to the next level, but you’re scared to put yourself out there, you must face this fear head on and do it anyway.
Business owners fail a lot, but they learn from their mistakes. You need to be able to get up after something you tried has failed, dust yourself off, learn from it and take the next step. If you’re not willing to keep trying time and again your business will fail. I know this is clique, but owning a business really is a marathon and not a sprint. There are no get rich quick schemes out there. If there were, everyone would already be doing it. It takes years and not just months to be successful.
Owning a Successful Business Takes Years
When business owners tell me, “I tried everything and it didn’t work”, I ask them what they tried and unfortunately, it’s usually not much. Be honest with yourself, did you really try everything or are you just not willing to put in the blood, sweat and tears that it takes to be a successful business owner? Are you afraid to put yourself out there because you might look stupid? Do you care that much about what people really think of you to not take an important step in your business?
When I began Musial Marketing five years ago, I had never even created a video much less did public speaking or created webinars. I had no idea how to even get started. I got help from a variety of coaches and I implemented what they told me to do. I am not a natural speaker and my fear was very high, but I did it anyway and it got easier.
In 2016 I hit one of my milestone goals in business which was all culminated from the work I had done during the five years prior from public speaking, webinars, videos, blogging, social media, email marketing and the list goes on and on. My best clients found me when I put myself out there in the public. There were many times I worked 80+ hour weeks building my business.
Do you have what it takes to be a successful Business Owner?
Ask yourself these questions and see if the answer is enough to sustain you through really tough times on your way to becoming a successful business owner.
- What is my purpose for getting into business?
- What is my why for getting into business?
- Am I in it for the long haul or the short term?
- Am I willing to put in everything I have mentally, physically and monetarily to make this business work?
- Can I face my fears and do it anyway?
- Am I willing to learn and then take action?
If your answers are not rock solid to the questions above, quit now and save yourself the hassle of wasted time and money. The reason 80 to 90 percent of all businesses fail is because the answers to these five questions are not solid.
